Free Art Saturday “Native American Game” at Mansfield Art Center

Join in for the making of a fun little Native American game called “STAVE.”

We will be teaching the craft of wood burning (Pyrography) and will safely allow each participant to use the wood burner to make their game. We will do this with leadership and supervision; a low number of students and a strict limit on age. No students under 8 years old will be allowed at this event.

Stave is a game played either with two people or by a number of people who sit opposite and face each other in two lines, each player contesting with their opposite neighbor. Twelve sticks are placed on the ground between the two players.

The player (kneeling or squatting on the ground) grasps the four playing pieces, holding them vertically. With a slight motion, the player  scatters the playing pieces on the ground in front of themselves. The side of the playing pieces that shows uppermost are what count.

The person that makes a successful (point  earning) throw then takes the number of sticks the throw earned them from the center pile- one stick is taken for each point. So long as the player is making successful throws it is still their turn, an unsuccessful throw results in the turn being turned over to the next player for their turn.

When sticks have all been taken from the center pile, the successful thrower begins to take sticks from their opponent to make up the difference called for by the throw. When one player holds all 12 sticks then there is the winner.

Our Holiday Fair will be taking place concurrently and we invite families to shop while the Free Art Saturday event is taking place or afterwards.

For the safety of everyone we recommend social distancing and masks are required. Due to covid-19 we can only accommodate a maximum of 10 people for the class, so register soon!
