Of the many horrors soldiers suffered in the First World War, facial injuries were among the most common and tragic. Trench warfare led to the disfigurement of thousands of soldiers on both sides. American sculptor Anna Coleman Ladd worked with American and French soldiers to craft life-like yet paper-thin metal masks to hide their wounds. This newly-created work examines her efforts as well as the wounds and healing of soldiers, doctors, nurses, and artists then and now.
