Main Street Books is thrilled to announce a talk and book signing by Tom Batiuk, the creator of Funky Winkerbean and Crankshaft. Batiuk visited last holiday season when the second volume of his Funky Winkerbean collection was released. He comes again with another new book, this one entitled Strike Four!: The Crankshaft Baseball Book. It is a collection of baseball-related Crankshaft comics.
The Comic Strip:
The strip’s namesake, Ed Crankshaft, is a former minor league baseball pitcher who was deeply disappointed when his dreams to make the majors did not materialize. Now, as an older man, he moves through life as a cantankerous school bus driver with a family that loves him despite it all.
Crankshaft, created by Tom Batiuk and drawn by Chuck Ayers, debuted in 1987 as a spin-off of Batiuk’s well-known and much-loved Funky Winkerbean strip. Readers will recognize the familiar and engaging narrative style in this strip, as well. Also like Funky, it deals with some heavy topics at the same time it makes us laugh. In Crankshaft they tackle adult illiteracy, Alzheimer’s disease, and school violence.
Crankshaft is available daily and on Sundays in over 300 newspapers worldwide. While it does appeal most directly to an older segment of the population or to those with retirees in their family, Crankshaft will appeal to all readers with its recognizable characters and emotionally-driven plotlines. This book in particular plays to the baseball fans among us.
The Visiting Artist: Born in Akron, Ohio, Tom Batiuk graduated from Kent State University in 1969 and then taught in Elyria local schools. He began drawing comics in 1970, with a weekly panel in the Elyria Chronicle Telegram, and then created Funky Winkerbean in 1972.
As always, everyone is welcome to stay after the author event for the monthly Book Loft, Lit event, a literary open mic for readers and writers, alike. See our website for more information.
