Sweet Treats to Beat the Heat

It’s hot. That means it’s time to celebrate National Ice Cream Month!  President Reagan created the holiday in 1984, (National Ice Cream Day being the third Sunday in July), calling for all people to observe the day with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Let us help you celebrate. Here are some great places to cool off with a sweet treat this summer in Richland County.

Kelly’s Dairy Bar and Miniature Golf

Kelly’s offers so much to do and great food too! They feature a driving range, mini golf course, lunch favorites and a full dairy bar. They boast more than a dozen flavors in both soft serve and hand dipped ice cream. Mix and match for shakes, smoothies or sundaes. Waffle cones and bowls, fried ice cream, banana splits or just a plain sugar cone? They have it. Kelly’s prides itself on using the best ice cream and on exploring the state for new and interesting flavors such as Cotton Candy Confetti, Cave Man Chocolate, and Java Chip. Have a classic brownie sundae or whip it into an ice cream flurry. Stay for lunch or put around the 18 holes of mini golf while you are there!

Olivesburg General Store

If you grew up in the area, then you know the that one scoop means four at The Olivesburg General Store. You’ll be glad to know that’s still true. For those just visiting, The Olivesburg General Store is a step back in time. Hand dipped ice cream, deli sandwiches made with Amish cheese and meats, kitchen gadgets, old fashioned drinks and snacks, along with homemade crafts for sale. This place has been around since 1840. Even though it is under new management, it still has everything we love about it. Choose from 16 different ice cream flavors, Milk Shakes & Sundaes. And if you’re traveling The Shawshank Trail, be sure and get their Signature Shawshank Sundae (made with a warm brownie, Peanut Butter Ice Cream, Hot Fudge, Whip Cream and Mini M&M’s). For a local bit of history, the original ceiling lights used in the movie The Shawshank Redemption now hang at Olivesburg General Store! Get off the main drag and enjoy this sweet pick!

Paul’s Drive-In

This 50’s style diner is still serving great food and ice cream after more than 60 years! Their menu includes a great selection of burgers, sandwiches, wings, fried favorites, soups and salads. But the main attraction is the ice cream. Try the classics or create something new. Enjoy a monster banana split (you may want to share). Create an Avalanche with your favorite slushie poured over your pick of ice cream. Add your favorite candy to your ice cream for a refreshing flurry. And for the little ones, be sure and get Shelby’s Tiniest Sundae for only 50 cents. Order a personalized ice cream cake for your special occasion or ask about soft serve ice cream & frozen drink machine rentals all year round. Paul’s Drive-In returns you to your childhood and classic summer memories!
